“Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the Lord.”
Psalms 146:1-10 NIV
How did you feel reading this Psalm? I had to resist the urge to title it “O YEAH” lol this chapter covers a myriad of things All of which makes me want to shout O Yeah!
The writers are said to be Haggai and Zechariah. Some collaboration don’t you think?
They begin with a shout. Praise the Lord. Then they spoke to their souls. Praise the Lord my soul! Then they follow up with a declaration in unison: I will praise the Lord all my life, I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Is that where this message finds you this morning? Is your soul bursting out with praise? Declaring you will be a praiser of your God till your last breath?
They must’ve come through a victorious situation with God being their help, they must’ve found out that the promises of men are futile. Here they are admonishing us not to put our trust in leaders, in human beings who cannot save. They remind us that they’re no different than us, prone to failure. But when we trust in the God of Jacob we are blessed. In this election cycle this is a good reminder that no political party or leader has the answers. Their plans and promises come to nothing. They all say what they think we want to hear. Gullible people without discernment fall for the empty promises made every two or four years. We need to be prayerful. Our Hope should be in God alone and the promises in His word.
Here’s why: He is the Maker of Heaven and earth, and remains faithful forever! Politicians come and go. Their rhetoric dies with them. But only God is faithful and keeps His Word. From verse 6-9 we read all He stands for, all He does and why we can trust Him. Pause for a minute and reflect on your life since you’ve been born again. When has He not been faithful? When has He ever failed or abandoned you? When have you ever lacked for your daily needs? Can you honestly say that you are worse off having surrendered to Christ? Did He leave you the way He found you? I can stand up and declare to you and the world that had it not been for Jesus I would’ve been dead!
I can say with Haggai and Zechariah, I have a reason to praise Him and will do so all my life. If all He did was reconcile me in Jesus Christ and never did another thing, that’s my reason to praise Him. But He went farther than I was deserving of. He showered me with blessings. My hope and my confidence in Jesus are a sure foundation. How about you? Verse 5 says; “Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.” Hallelujah! Misplaced hope is useless hope. It’s like finding a well in a desert only to find out it’s dry. But that’s not what we have in the God of Jacob.
Listen to Psalm 145: The Lord is trustworthy in all He promises and faithful in all He does. The Lord is righteous in all His ways and faithful in all He does. My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord.
Those are shouting words right there! Faithful, trustworthy, righteous in ALL He does. That’s why we praise Him! That’s why we trust Him! That’s why we honor and adore Him! He is WORTHY of all our praise! Hallelujah to the sweet Lamb of God, Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Go ahead, shout your praise! If you’re feeling a little down today, speak to your soul. Remind it of the God of Jacob. Yes! We face things that try to shut our mouths and silence our praise. But shout out, I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Psalm 103. All my life I will bless and praise the Lord!
Don’t be sidetracked by what’s going on around you. The devil is having a very bad day and it shows. But we will remain steadfast in hope. Our hope is in Jesus! Not the next president, governor, mayor, senator or congressman. We will not place our confidence in fallible man. We will stand firmly on THE ROCK...Jesus Christ the Righteous. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord my soul!
Father God in the Name of Jesus Christ our Rock, we thank you for another opportunity to praise You. To be in the land of the living. We know that those in the grave cannot praise you, so we that are alive in You will bless and praise You. Thank you for being our Promise Keeper. We who know You have found that You’re everything Your Word says You are. So we praise you, with our whole being we praise You. We remind our souls to bless You. You deserve it all. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.
