“This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, To the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should hope and wait quietly For the salvation of the Lord.”
Lamentations 3:21-26 NKJV
What are you recalling when things are going awry? Where are you drawing strength and hope from in moments of great distress and uncertainty? It’s so much easier to give into complaining and self pity. I know because I’ve allowed myself to go there more times than I’d like to recall. But thanks be to our long suffering God, who allows us to deal with our humanness without writing us off.
Jeremiah was going through what would’ve caused most of us to give up. Yet in the midst of his worse testing, he came back into focus declaring the most hope filled words.‘Through the Lord’s mercies and faithfulness we’re not consumed, and we can have hope in the worst of times.’ He was basically saying that we can hang on to our hope in God. That hope never disappoints us. Bible hope can also be translated in two other words. Wait and trust. Wherever you see hope, you may use those two words interchangeably. Either way, we’re hoping not wishing. Hope is much stronger than a wish, especially if your hope is in the One who never fails. Isaiah wrote:
“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. but they who wait (hope in) for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:8, 31 ESV
“You’ll know then that I am God. No one who hopes in Me ever regrets it.”
Isaiah 49:-23b MSG
“As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.”
Romans 10:11 NLT
“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again— my Savior and” my God” Psalms 42:5 NLT
“Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”
Romans 5:2, 4-5 ESV
Did you see what I saw in Romans 5? Character produces hope. Who knew🤷🏼♀️ godly character or perspective, produces hope, confident trust and endurance while we wait or go through trials and testing. And we will never be put to shame. We’re not speaking of “barely getting by hanging” , we are talking about steadfast hope made possible by God’s love being in our hearts through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. See Morning Messages “Faith working through love” October 28, 2021 we serve a God of hope, not ‘hope so.’ We can hang our entire lives on the peg of this Hope. Hope has a name: Jesus the Christ. This is why we can get through anything if our hope is not misplaced.
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”
Hebrews 10:23 ESV
Who promised? Not man but God. When the promise is from someone who has established Himself as faithful has proven Himself to be trustworthy over centuries. We can hang on to hope. Jeremiah found that Hope, Lamentation three is hard to read until you get to verse twenty-one then you can breathe a sigh of relief. All is not lost. Hope is with us. Unfailing faithfulness is with us. We find Him closer than our problems if we wait without fainting. Jeremiah declared: The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. When the world says hang in there, or I’m hanging in there, it’s with crossed fingers. We don’t hope against hope. We hope in Hope.
“And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even He who arises to rule the Gentiles; in Him will the Gentiles hope.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
Romans 15:12-13 ESV
“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
Romans 15:4 ESV
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”
1 Peter 1:3, 13, 21 ESV
I want you to see what Peter encouraged us to do. First he said we have been born again to not a wishing I hope so but to a living hope. Secondly, we are to set our hope fully on the grace of Jesus Christ. Grace, that enabling power to do what we’re incapable of doing in our own strength. And lastly, that this Hope is in God alone. That’s our strategy for a life that overcomes in every and all circumstances. That’s a winning combination. Jeremiah,Isaiah, Paul and Peter have demonstrated through their own trusting, waiting and hoping that we’re more than conquerors through Him in which we hope.
I’ll close with these verses from Hebrews;
“And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. For when God made a promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater by whom to swear, He swore by Himself, saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of His purpose, He guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”
Hebrews 6:11-20 ESV
We therefore hang on to Hope. For we know that our Hope never disappoints us or makes us embarrassed to declare our trust in waiting. Hope for us is a Person. Our forerunner Jesus and a Father who never lies. We hold confidently to His Word knowing that He will never let one of His promises fail. So are you hanging on to hope? His Hope? Then recall to your mind with confidence the verses of Lamentation three and set your mind on our winning strategy in a hopeless world.
“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,”
Titus 2:11-13 ESV
