3/25/21 - ARE YOU TRYING TO SUPPLY YOUR OWN NEEDS?

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Now all glory to God our Father forever and ever! Amen.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7, 19-20‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Is it biblical to meet your own needs? Not according to the above scripture. As hard as it may be to believe, even though we work to make a living, God’s original intent was that we not labor or struggle, but that we would enjoy the fruit of whatever we did. But despite what has created the struggle, He has promised that if we would depend on Him, seeking Him as our Source in all we do, we’d never lack any good thing. Psalm 34:10. Psalm 23. Don’t be moved by what you see. Be moved by what you know. John 16:13

Never just look at the difficulty, it makes you forget the power in you. It’s not what you see it’s Who you know. Looking at the difficulty blocks your believing and receiving. God is not man that He should lie. Therefore if He said it, our response and responsibility, is to believe it.

If you read the entire chapter of Philippians 4, you’ll discover that the apostle Paul wasn’t complaining about his situation, rather he was encouraging the believers who had been used of God as a support for him at a critical moment in his life. And in return he told them that the same God who supplied his needs would supply theirs also. Let’s take a look.

“How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty.”

‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:10-14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

So we see that Paul wasn’t depending on them but on the Lord who had helped him overcome every situation in his life. If we saw everything we accomplished or went through in our lives as a part of His divine will for us, we’d never complain another day, but do what the beginning verses say, don’t worry about anything. I’ve shared with you how the Lord told me to let Him take care of me. I didn’t jump up and down with glee at first, because I allowed my eyes instead of my heart to look at what was in front of me, I wanted to see how He planned to do it. But that wasn’t faith. I told you He introduced me to a new word. He called me petulant. Ouch!

One of my favorite preachers said this. “Never think with your eyes, because Satan will alway show you something you shouldn’t be looking at. Your eyes have limitations, your heart does not.”

A heart that believes by faith, isn’t limited by what the natural eyes see. I saw what was before me, God wanted me to see what was ahead of me. I wasn’t doing a good job supplying my own needs, He was offering me stress free living. We were not created to be our own provider. Think about it for a minute. Did Adam go to God and ask for provision? Not at all. God provided everything in advance. Our problem is, we pat ourselves on the back every time we accomplish something. We hardly ever stop to thank Him. As Christians, every good and perfect gift we enjoy, comes from Him. James 1:17 and we should be filled with gratitude.

Your career, your home/apartment, your car, your family, (even the ones we don’t like) your degrees, your health, your next breath. It all comes from Him. You may be saying “but I worked hard for what I have” that’s the thing. Like Adam, He provided the opportunity for you to have employment. He gave you a mind and intellect, the ability to learn and succeed. Do you think that just happened because you’re so smart? He supplied all you needed to accomplish great things. God does not help those who help themselves, He helps those who are dependent upon Him. I know! The Bible says if a man doesn’t work he shouldn’t eat. God isn’t supportive of laziness, or idleness. 2 Thessalonians 3:6-12. But we shouldn’t forget that He supplied the job and the ability to do it. Colossians 3:17

We struggle in life because we’ve left Him out. Even though we say we’re trusting Him. For every time I have been in a bind, I can look back and see that I was either out of His will, or I had taken matters into my own hands. Without fail, every time I have allowed Him to lead, even if it looks like this cannot be Him, it has all worked out as I trusted Him and followed the process. I cannot begin to tell you, how many times while in prayer, He has told me to go call a company I was having problems with, and watch Him turn everything around in my favor. As a single parent I went through some rough times, but I never went under. He would guide me, but I had to be willing to listen. I have an amazing testimony about Sheri’s under grad and grad school processes. Only God could do what happened in those situations.

Side note; Never apologize for the blessings of God in your life, brag on your God, share what He’s done even if you’re criticized and misunderstood. King David did, that’s why he was so loved and blessed. Most people haven’t shared one thing God has done for them, because it wasn’t a big deal. It’s a big deal to me that He even considers me. Let alone bless me. I don’t need a millionaire’s windfall to brag on God, all I have to do is think of who I was when He found me, where He’s brought me from, what He continually does in my life and my child’s life, and I can’t keep silent. Am I making it about me? Yes! Because I can’t speak for you! I’m making it about my God! The psalmist said these words. I WILL SING OF THE MERCIES OF THE LORD FOREVER! WITH MY MOUTH WILL I MAKE KNOWN THY FAITHFULNESS TO ALL GENERATIONS! Psalm 89:11 I will never shy away from giving my God praise for what He does for me. Hallelujah

We were never intended to supply our needs. He promised in His Word that He would. In Hebrews 13 He made us this incredible promise, but with the promise came instructions.

“Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my Helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?”

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭13:5-6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We say we’re working hard because we “need” the extra money. We neglect our health and families, trying to amass what we believe will make our lives easier. Well how is that, or has that worked or is working out for you? Whatever you commit to Him, He will take care of. When the Lord told me to retire earlier than the required age for early retirement, I thought I had figured everything out, then He dropped a bombshell and removed one of the areas of income I had factored in. Fear gripped my heart. I tried to do everything to help God out, it only got worse. I had to wave the white flag of surrender. I had to come to the realization that I couldn’t supply my needs. He’s the only One who has the capability to supply “all” He will give us strategic thoughts about what to do. Following Him has made my life so much easier.

I’ve shared my testimony countless times to encourage others who are facing challenges, to trust Him. I’m making less, giving more, and lacking nothing. All because I’m allowing Him to do what He has promised. “I’ve retired you, let Me take care of you.” I don’t decide the channels He uses, I just get to be obedient. Paul didn’t determine the channels that His need would be supplied through, but he gave all the glory to God, while acknowledging and thanking the hands through which it came. I was offered multiple opportunities to work. Some offering to pay me whatever I wanted. Each time I would seek the Lord, His response to the last offer was. “I don’t want them saying, I retired you and can’t take care of you.” But my God, shall supply all your/my need according to HIS riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Not according to my education, job or bank account. Everything I have came from Him. And I hold it loosely.

“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;”

‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭6:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The wealth of this world without the acknowledgment of the Provider, leads to pride and arrogance. It promotes self reliance. We live in an economic society, we need finances, but our trust should never be in the earning of it, but in the living God who has so freely blessed us. God in His wisdom has not allowed some people to gain wealth, because He knows that without Him in the driver’s seat it will ruin them. We are not supposed to supply our own needs, that’s His promise to keep, and ours to believe.

So what are your wants? Because our need is already supplied. He hasn’t limited His supply to finances. Are you sick in your body, He’s made provision for that. Isaiah 53, Psalm 103, 1 Peter 2:24 comes to mind, are you anxious about your employment or lack thereof, our text speaks to that and covers everything else that matters to you, and so does the verse in Hebrews 13 that I shared. He will never abandon you or forsake you. That’s a promise you can count on until His return. So cease from struggling. Let Him do what He has promised. You’ll never be put to shame or be disappointed. EVER! He’s true to His Word. If everything you have, and everything you are is from Him, and you believe that, then do what Proverbs 3:5-6 and Matthew 6:33 says and live in His abundance.

We’re in a faith walk not an intellectual theoretical sprint. Faith believes in what it cannot see, intellect is like cataracts to the eyes, you can still see, but it’s blurred. We walk by faith, not by sight.
