“You are coming to Christ, who is the living Cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but He was chosen by God for great honor. And you are living stones that God is building into His spiritual temple. What’s more, you are His holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a Cornerstone in Jerusalem, chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in Him will never be disgraced.” Yes, you who trust Him recognize the honor God has given Him. But for those who reject Him, “The Stone that the builders rejected has now become the Cornerstone.” And, “He is the Stone that makes people stumble, the Rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s Word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.”
1 Peter 2:4-8 NLT
Is the Word of God a stumbling block in your life? Have you become disillusioned with waiting on what He has promised? Most times He’s not the cause of the delayed response. We are. I heard someone say that the reason most Christians give up is an abundance of time. But if we’d let time serve us, instead of us serving time, we’d never be discouraged. What does he mean by that. It’s simple really, eternal beings, which we are, are never moved by time. Everything God has promised has a manifestation date on it. When we set ourselves in agreement with His will, time no longer controls us.
What causes us to stumble? Disobedience and unbelief. Choosing to go about biblical truths our way, creates a stumbling block to the promises of God. The Bible says Jesus Christ alone is the pathway to God. Many religions stumble over that truth. Instead of accepting what God has said, they set about to create a pathway of their own. The Bible says fornication is a sin. We stumble over that because we want to live life our way. All unrighteousness is sin, that’s what the Bible teaches. To ignore that and create loopholes in order to sidestep God’s order, creates a stumbling and eventual crushing by the very thing that was designed to protect us.
Jesus showing up with the message of Grace and love, declaring He was the fulfillment of the law and the way to the Father, became a major stumbling block to the pharisaic order of the day. Like most Christians, they had studied the Word, but never understood it. How do I know that? When truth shows up and instead of liberating you, it makes you angry. You’re stumbling. They rejected everything Jesus taught. Even though everything they had read pointed to Him as their Messiah.
Fast forward to the 21st century. The church is pretty much doing the same thing. We have more progressives within the church world trying to rewrite the Bible to suit the new normal as never before. They even have the gall to say the Bible is outdated and out of touch. They even deny the wrath of God against disobedience. They say God is a God of love, and He is, but He has also said He will not alter or change the Word that has gone out of His mouth. Psalm 89:34 God has set His Son as the only way, only truth, only life. He has also put in place biblical laws for how we should live our lives as living stones. Anyone connected to Jesus has a responsibility to represent and stand up for what He teaches.
So are you stumbling over the Cornerstone? He’s the only firm foundation for the Church and for our individual lives, and He won’t change the order no matter how woke we become. He’s the living Cornerstone of God’s temple. We are that temple. Not the building we meet in on Sunday mornings. A building can’t reject Him. We can. But just read the verses again. What a privilege we have been given. To be built in His body as living stones. Jesus has made a way for us to be built into the plan of God the Father. He removed the punishment for sin and promised that by believing in Him, instead of a stumbling stone, Jesus has become a precious Stone.
Don’t allow disobedience and unbelief to rob you of the support you need to keep your foundation stable. No structure can sustain the winds of adversity without a supporting beam. Our Cornerstone Jesus, supports and sustains us through every challenges of life. He said we’d never be put to shame. We can trust and rely on Him no matter what. Because we reject Him, doesn’t mean we walk away unscathed. What is meant to be precious will become a stumbling and a crushing stone. Choices. We all make them. Good or bad. But what I love about the Lord is the tender care He takes to make sure we have everything we need to make the right choices.
“Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when He judges the world.”
1 Peter 2:11-12 NLT
We are our choices. God has given us free will. He will never overrule your decision to accept or reject His Son. But He will keep those who want to be kept. Those who reject His Choice as their Cornerstone, Peter wrote; they stumble because they disobey the message. What message? That Jesus Christ was chosen by God to be the only way to eternal life. And that we are to live lives acceptable to God through Him. Without Jesus as the Cornerstone of our faith, we remain separated from God. Don’t allow the sin of disobedience to cause you to miss out on all God has for you through Christ.
“You were like sheep that continually wandered away, but now you have returned to the true Shepherd of your lives—the kind Guardian who lovingly watches over your souls.”
