Jesus said “for judgement I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” Some Pharisees who were with Him heard Him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would have not been guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.” John 9:35-41
The passage above addresses spiritual blindness. When dealing with a pharisaic spirit, as Jesus did his entire earthly ministry, can be quite daunting. When you approach the Word of God from your own self-righteousness or point of view, you’re never open to hearing what the Holy Spirit is saying; because you have already made up your mind about YOUR truth. The scriptures says such people are ever learning, yet never coming to the knowledge of the TRUTH. 2 Timothy 3:7
If you’re an avid reader of the gospels, you’ll discover that, this was true throughout all four, and carried over into New Testament where the Church was birthed,in the book of Acts; because my friends that spirit of needing to be right, and in control, never dies.
Jesus had no problem with the woman caught in adultery, the tax collectors, the drunkards, the woman with five ex-husbands and now shacking up, but He had a lot of problems with the religious Pharisees and the Scribes. The ones who claim to know and keep the laws perfectly. Most if not all of Jesus’ writings were aimed at these folks. The funny thing was they always knew Jesus was speaking about them even though He spoke in parables. Lol
Take for example this statement by Jesus in the text. “For judgement I have come into the world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” Did Jesus call any names? We have a saying in Jamaica. I’ll have to say it properly. “When you throw stones into a pig pen, the hog who squealed was the one who got hit.” Selah
So here goes the Pharisees response “What? Are we blind too?” haha! If you claim you can see, then why hasn’t your life been transformed by Jesus’ Word? These guys were a mess! Jesus didn’t have to name names; His Word called them out every time. They thought so highly of themselves that Jesus and those that followed Him were beneath them. I’ll share another verse from the same chapter (guys you have to read this whole chapter on your own time it’s a beautiful eye opening exchange) I’ll pick it up in verse 28 this conversation is between the Pharisees and the man Jesus healed who was born blind.
Then they hurled insults at him and said, “You are this fellow’s disciple! WE are disciples of Moses!” We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow (speaking of Jesus) we don’t even know where He comes from....hold the phone...these are scholars of the Torah? disciples of Moses? Jesus, on the Emmaus road, according to Luke 24:27 taught a couple of His followers about Himself beginning at Moses( the first five books of the Torah) and all the prophets, all that had been written about Him.
Yes folks, Jesus is written about from Genesis to Revelation but these teachers and scholars of the teachings of Moses missed it; just as many are missing it today. Let's continue. V30 The man answered, “Now that is remarkable! You don’t know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.” This is how I would have responded. “ So, you say you’re scholars of Moses, yet you don’t know that He’s the One Moses wrote about?” That’s remarkable! But that’s just me. V34 To this they replied, “ You were steeped in sin at birth; (ouch) how dare you lecture us!” And they threw him out. Stone in the hog pen. Lol
I thank God everyday that I’m not educated, scholastically speaking. I’m being serious. I’ve found that God can do more with a donkey than He can with a Pharisees. I do not have a college degree like my daughter, never went to Bible College; but I’m in no way intimidated by her piece of paper. David the shepherd boy, said this in Psalm 119:99 before becoming king of Israel,(and I put myself right in there). “I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on Your statutes.” That’s my degree right there!! And I’m proud of it! God said, “To fear Him is the beginning of wisdom”. He rarely if ever, calls the qualified. He qualifies the called. You should be shouting by now. Hallelujah to our faithful God!!!
I would never have known the things I share were it not for Him giving me revelation. I shock myself sometimes when I hear what’s coming out of my mouth; I have to stop, listen and learn from myself when God is speaking through me by His Spirit. I’m bragging for sure but not on me! On Him! He’s my plan A to Z. Thank you Jesus -how about you?
Father in the Name of Jesus, your Word teaches us never to think more highly of ourselves than we ought. Your Word also says that our boasting should be about our acquaintance with You. Therefore today I choose to boast in the Lord for all Your kindness towards me. Undeserved, unearned. Thank you for the mind of Christ and the wisdom of God freely given me at my new birth. In Jesus Name. Amen
