Have you ever gone to purchase a particular thing and left with something more wonderful than anything you could’ve ever imagined? You left feeling like you’ve hit the jackpot? Well in our study today someone actually did. Her day started like every other day. Ostracized, dejected and dissatisfied. She had chosen this particular hour of the day to avoid the name calling, finger pointing and gossip of the other women. What she didn’t realize was, this day was to be like no other. An unexpected and unlikely stranger was about to change her life forever.
I know, you’re probably saying “I could use that encounter right about now.” Well He’s actually closer than you think. Waiting to transform your mundane into a supernatural encounter. But first let’s read her story. With Jesus, nothing just happens. We’re always on His mind, as some of us learned from our study of Psalm 139 last evening.
“Wearied by His long journey, He sat on the edge of Jacob’s well, and sent His disciples into the village to buy food, for it was already afternoon. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” Jesus arrived at the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
She replied, “Why would a Jewish man ask a Samaritan woman for a drink of water?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)”
John 4:5-9 TPT
Fair question. For under normal circumstances the two don’t mix. As a matter of fact, they avoided each other like the plague. The samaritans were a mixed race, Jew and Gentile. But this wasn’t just a chance encounter, this day was on God’s calendar for her before she was ever born. Or as the Praise translation puts it:
“You saw who you created me to be before I became me! Before I’d ever seen the light of day, the number of days you planned for me were already recorded in your book.” Psalms 139:16 TPT
Jesus could’ve stopped anywhere, and drawn water from a rock, if need be. But this was more than a thirst for water, this was a thirst for life. So the dialogue continues; but to get to the heart of the matter, honesty and clarity must be at the forefront. So for this message we won’t go through the entire chapter, but we’ll focus on the event itself. I’ve covered this chapter in other messages that are in the archived section of Morning Messages.
“Jesus replied, “If you only knew who I Am and the gift that God wants to give you, you’d ask Me for a drink, and I would give you living water.” The woman replied, “But sir, you don’t even have a bucket, and the well is very deep. So where do you find this ‘living water’?
Jesus answered, “If you drink from Jacob’s well, you’ll be thirsty again, but if anyone drinks the living water I give them, they will never be thirsty again. For when you drink the water I give you, it becomes a gushing fountain of the Holy Spirit, flooding you with endless life!” The woman replied, “Let me drink that water so I’ll never be thirsty again and won’t have to come back here to draw water.” Jesus said, “Go get your husband and bring him back here.” “But I’m not married,” the woman answered. “That’s true,” Jesus said, “for you’ve been married five times, and now you’re living with a man who is not your husband. You have told the truth.” The woman changed the subject. “You must be a prophet!” John 4:10-11, 13-19 TPT
I asked the Bible study group this question last evening. ‘ what do you do when the Word convicts you?’ Do you allow the penetrating eyes of the Word to bring correction, or do you hurry past those verses? The woman at the well deflected the revelation about how she’s been living to pay Jesus a tepid compliment. But Jesus wasn’t falling for it. He instead gave her a lesson on true worship and worshippers. Facing our hidden secrets or past, can be scary. So I get why she responded by changing the subject. But only an honest appraisal of oneself, will bring total healing and closure.
“The woman said, “ This is all so confusing, but I do know that the Anointed One is coming—the true Messiah. And when He comes, He will tell us everything we need to know.” Jesus said to her, “You don’t have to wait any longer, the Anointed One is here speaking with you—I Am the One you’re looking for.”
All at once, the woman left her water jar and ran off to her village and told everyone, “Come and meet a man at the well who told me everything I’ve ever done! He could be the One we’ve been waiting for.” Hearing this, the people came streaming out of the village to go see Jesus.”
John 4:25-26, 28-30 TPT
I started out by asking a question at the beginning of the message. When you’ve found or encountered something or someone better, you’ll forget what you went for. The Bible says in the verses above, that as soon as Jesus introduced Himself as her long awaited Messiah, She left her water pot. She forgot why she had gone to the well. The supernatural water had replaced her natural thirst. She had met the Living Water, Water that would transform not just her but everyone she ran to share her thirst quenching encounter with. No doubt, the people noticed a change in her. She was no longer downcast, or timid. She was a bold witness for Jesus.
The entire village came out because of her testimony. Are you still thirsty after drinking from life’s well? Have you been drawing water that doesn’t satisfy? If you’re open to an honest encounter with Jesus, you too will leave your water pot, you’ll forget why you came to the well in the first place. Because a chance encounter has turned into a supernatural, never ending supply of the real thing. Then you’ll attract others to the One who instead of taking a drink, will give you to drink. Living water that quenches the spirit, body and soul.
It’s time to leave your water pot.
